When it is time to replace a boiler

Most Hudson Valley homes we work in heat with hot water: a boiler, circulators, zone valves and piping out to baseboard or radiators. At some point another repair is money spent on equipment near the end of its life. These are the signs we look for:

  • Repeat no-heat calls in the same season
  • Water leaking from the boiler itself, not just a fitting or valve
  • Rust, corrosion or soot around the heat exchanger or burner area
  • Short-cycling or lockouts that keep coming back after repairs
  • Fuel bills climbing while the house feels the same or colder
  • Not enough hot water from a boiler that also makes your domestic hot water

If the boiler is still worth fixing, we will say so. Repairs are on our boiler repair and heat plumbing page. If replacement is the better spend, you get a clear plan and upfront pricing before any work starts.

Boiler replacement options

Like-for-like replacement

A new boiler of the same type in the same spot, with the near-boiler piping brought up to date. Often the simplest swap.

High-efficiency wall-hung boiler

Condensing, modulating boilers that mount on the wall and adjust their output to the weather. They need a condensate drain and their own vent, which we plan for.

Combi boiler

One wall-hung unit for heat and on-demand hot water, so the separate water heater goes away. A good fit for many smaller and mid-size homes. Related: tankless water heater installation.

Boiler with an indirect water heater

The boiler heats a storage tank for domestic hot water. A strong choice for larger homes with several bathrooms running at once.

What a boiler replacement includes

  1. Walkthrough and sizing. We look at the size of the house, the type of heat (baseboard, radiators or radiant) and how many zones you have, so the new boiler fits the house and is not just matched to the old nameplate.
  2. New boiler and near-boiler piping. Circulators, zone valves, expansion tank, air separation, relief valve and fill valve, piped the way the manufacturer calls for.
  3. Venting and condensate. High-efficiency units get the venting and condensate drain they need.
  4. Fill, purge and test. We purge air, bring the system up to pressure and confirm every zone heats before we leave a clean jobsite.

We work on hot-water (hydronic) heating systems. If your home has a steam system or the problem is on the burner or controls side and not part of a replacement, we will tell you up front so you can call the right tech.

Boiler replacement FAQ

Should I repair or replace my old boiler?

It depends on the age of the boiler, the condition of the heat exchanger and piping, and how often it is failing. We give you a straight answer on whether a repair is worth it before you spend money.

Can I switch to a combi boiler?

Often, yes, if your home heats with hot water and the gas supply and venting support it. A combi heats the house and makes hot water on demand, so you no longer need a separate water heater. We check whether it can keep up with your bathrooms.

Will a high-efficiency boiler work with my baseboard or radiators?

In most homes, yes. Condensing boilers are most efficient with lower return water temperatures, and modern controls adjust to the weather.

Does a new boiler need new venting?

High-efficiency condensing boilers need their own vent and a condensate drain, usually through a side wall or roof instead of the old chimney. A like-for-like replacement may be able to use the existing vent if it is in good condition.

What if my boiler dies in the middle of winter?
