Is a tankless water heater right for your home?

A tankless water heater heats water only when you open a tap. Back-to-back showers stay hot as long as the unit is sized for the house. It mounts on a wall, which frees up floor space in a basement, utility room or closet.

It is a strong upgrade for many Hudson Valley homes, but not every one. If a new tank is the better value for your home, we will tell you.

Sizing for January water

Incoming water here gets very cold in winter, and a tankless unit has to heat it further to reach shower temperature. We size for the showers and fixtures you run at the same time on a cold morning, not a summer afternoon.

Gas line capacity

A gas tankless unit can need much more gas at full fire than the tank it replaces. We check the meter and line size.

Venting

Tankless units vent differently from a standard tank. Many condensing models vent with plastic pipe through a side wall or the roof. We plan the vent route before the job starts.

Condensate drain

High-efficiency condensing units make acidic water that needs a proper drain, often with a neutralizer. We plan where it goes.

Hard and well water

Scale is the biggest enemy of a tankless heat exchanger. On well water or hard water we talk about treatment and a descaling schedule up front.

How a tank-to-tankless switch works

  1. Walkthrough. We look at your current water heater, gas line, venting options and where the new unit can mount.
  2. A clear plan and price. You get upfront pricing for the install and a straight answer on whether tankless fits your home before any work starts.
  3. Install. The old tank comes out, the unit goes on the wall, and we run the gas, water, vent and condensate lines. We add isolation valves so the unit can be descaled without cutting pipe later.
  4. Startup and walkthrough. We fire the unit, check temperatures at the fixtures and show you the shutoffs and service valves. We leave a clean jobsite.

Tankless hot water from a combi boiler

If you heat with a hot-water boiler, a combi boiler can be another way to get tankless hot water. One wall-hung unit heats the house and makes hot water on demand, so the separate water heater goes away. See boiler replacement in Middletown, NY for how we handle that.

Keeping a tankless water heater running

Most manufacturers call for periodic descaling, and homes on hard or well water need it more often. We install, descale and service tankless units, and we can tell you the schedule your model calls for.

Planning a bathroom remodel with a bigger shower or soaking tub? Plan the hot water with it. If you only need a standard tank repaired or replaced, see water heater repair and replacement. A leaking tank is an emergency plumbing call.

Tankless water heater FAQ

How long does a tankless water heater installation take?

Many tank-to-tankless swaps are finished in a day. If the gas line needs to be upsized or the vent has to take a longer route, it can take longer. We tell you what to expect before we start.

Will a tankless water heater keep up with two showers in winter?

It will if it is sized for that. Cold winter water is the hardest test for a tankless unit, so we size for the number of fixtures you run at once in January.

Can I put a tankless water heater on well water?

Yes. Well water often carries minerals that build scale, so we talk about water treatment and a regular descaling schedule to protect the heat exchanger.

Does a tankless water heater need a new vent?

Usually, yes. A tankless unit typically cannot reuse the chimney or vent from a standard gas tank. Condensing units often vent with plastic pipe through a side wall or roof. We plan the route during the walkthrough.

Is tankless worth it compared with a new tank?

It depends on your home and how you use hot water. Tankless gives you continuous hot water and frees up space. A tank costs less up front and is simpler to install. We will give you an honest recommendation for your house.
